What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

The trigeminal nerve is the largest of cranial nerves and consists of 12 pairs of nerves that control many functions of the face. Although there has been no direct cause linked to Trigeminal Neuralgia there is a wide range of things that are believed to contributing factors including; pressure on the nerve, aging, or a neurological disorders that wears away the myelin such as cerebral palsy as well as other causes include injury or stroke.

Individuals who suffer with Trigeminal Neuralgia have been known to experience severe pain in the face and jaw. It can be server enough that even slight stimulation can trigger pain. The pain is often described as a shooting or jabbing pain in the face and jaw. In some people an episode begins with a burning sensation in the lower jaw and face. The pain pattern varies from person to person and may be localized or can spread and may worsen over time. It pain from Trigeminal Neuralgia can also last a few minutes, days or even months.
